פתיחה של גלריה ישראלית בניו יורק היא אירוע ראוי לציון. נדמה לי, שאין אמן יאה יותר לפתוח אתו מאשר יעקב דורצ'ין.
דורצ'ין, זוכה פרס ישראל – הפרס היוקרתי ביותר, שמעניקה המדינה על תרומה לתרבות – נולד בחיפה בשנת 1946, שירת בצנחנים ועודנו חי ועובד בקיבוץ כפר החורש. ביצירתו כמו בקורות חייו, הוא מסמל היבט מהותי של הישראליות. דורצ'ין הוא מחשובי האמנים הישראלים החיים ופועלים כיום, ופסליו במרחב הציבורי נעשו זה מכבר לחלק בלתי נפרד מן הנוף הישראלי.

ומהו הפסל הדורצ'יני? זו השארית החלודה של כלי עבודה (רוסי? אמריקאי?), שסיים את חייו בקיבוץ, קוּמט וקוּפל, רוּתך וסוּבב, והיה למלאך. זוהי קשיחות אלימה ותכליתית, המצמיחה רוך בלתי נתפש.
לא מזמן השתתפתי בדיון פומבי סביב השאלה, האם האמנות הישראלית היא סניף של האמנות הבינלאומית, החי ופועל במונחיה ובשפתה, או שמא זו אמנות בעלת מאפיין אידיוסינקרטי, ההופך אותה לבלתי ניתנת לתרגום. אני חושב, שדורצ'ין הוא מקרה מבחן מעניין בהקשר זה. מצד אחד, יש לו זיקה ישירה ללב האמנות העכשווית ואפילו האמריקאית, מריצ'רד סרה ועד טוני סמית' ורבים אחרים, בכל הנוגע לחומר, לקו, למסה, לפואטיקה של מודרניזם. מצד אחר, יש משהו בדורצ'ין, שאותו יכול להבין באמת רק מי שראה את שלדי המשוריינים המחלידים של לוחמי תש"ח בשער הגיא בכניסה לירושלים; רק מי שראה טרקטור ישן מחליד במחסן של קיבוץ.
ישנו מכתב מפורסם של א.ד. גורדון, אבי "דת העבודה" של ראשית הציונות, שבו הוא טובע את המילה העברית "חוויה". גורדון טוען, שרק בעבודת האדמה של היהודי בארצו מתגלמת עבורו אפשרות החיים בתוך ההוויה. כתלמיד ישיבה בשטעטל, בגולה, הייתה לו הוויה, הוויית התלמיד, אך לא היו לו חיים; הוא לא היה מעורב באדמה, בעונות השנה, ביצירה, בקהילת בני האדם. ליהודי המתבולל, לעומתו, היו חיים, אך לא הייתה הוויה. כאן, בארץ ישראל, מוסיף גורדון, אנו חיים בתוך ההוויה-חוויה. זו הפרספקטיבה, שבאמצעותה אני מציע להבין את גושי הברזל החלודים הללו של דורצ'ין: כמו פרחים ומלאכים; מטאפיזיקה שלמה, הצומחת משאריות העבודה.

The opening of an Israeli gallery in New York is a noteworthy event, and it seems that the artist best suited to launch such an endeavor is Ya'acov Dorchin.
Recipient of the Israel Prize—the most prestigious distinction awarded by the State for contribution to Israeli culture—Dorchin was born in Haifa in 1946, served as a paratrooper in the IDF, and still lives and works in Kibbutz Kfar Hahoresh. In his work, as in his life, he epitomizes a central aspect of Israeliness. Dorchin is among the most important Israeli artists living and working today, and his sculptures in the public sphere have long been an integral part of the local landscape.
Dorchin's ability to extract spirituality, poetry, and delicacy from the heavy, rusty blocks of metal is nothing short of a miracle. His life's work puts the Biblical verse into practice: "and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks." The powerful and violent, the agricultural, the marine, the functional, and the monumental converge into the human, the stammering and whispering.
Discussing his work in a conversation with Helit Yeshurun, Dorchin said: "My practice largely consists of abstention. The sculpture becomes inescapable when it doesn't stop nagging me. It's much more prosaic than it sounds, but there is always freshness and surprise about it... The sculpture has already formed its hidden history before I even approach it."
What is a Dorchin sculpture? It is the rusty relic of a (Russian? American?) tool that ended its life on the kibbutz, was wrinkled and folded, welded and twisted to become an angel. It has a violent, purposeful hardness, which gives rise to inconceivable tenderness.
I recently participated in a public discussion on the question of whether Israeli art is a branch of international art which adheres to its concepts and language, or whether it has some idiosyncratic feature that renders it untranslatable. I think Dorchin is an interesting case in point in this context. On the one hand, he is directly linked to contemporary, and even American art, from Richard Serra to Tony Smith and many others, in terms of matter, line, mass, and modernist poetics. On the other hand, there is something about Dorchin that only someone who has seen the rusting shells of armored vehicles lining the roadside, remains of the 1948 convoys to besieged Jerusalem—only someone who has seen an old tractor rusting in a kibbutz shed—can truly understand.
In a famous letter, Zionist ideologue A.D. Gordon, the father of "the religion of labor" (aka Labor Zionism), coined the Hebrew word for "experience"—khavaya (a portmanteau of life, hayyim, and being, havaya). He believed that only via cultivation of the land, in his homeland, can a Jew realize the possibility of life as part of spiritual being. As a Yeshiva boy in the shtetl (Jewish village in Eastern Europe), in the Diaspora, the Jew had being, the being of a student, but no life; he was cut off from the land, the seasons, creation, the community of humans. The assimilated Jew, on the other hand, had a life, but no spiritual being. Here, in the Land of Israel, Gordon further argued, we Jews can live and fully experience our spiritual being. This is the prism through which I propose to regard Dorchin's lumps of rusty iron: like flowers and angels; a whole metaphysics that grows out of the remains of labor.
