"I feel close to Caravaggio's 'Doubting Thomas,' who digs into the wound as if he were doubting Christ's identity. I relate to the movement of the eye that needs touch in addition to sight, so as to reaffirm what you see, to feel what you see. Viewers of my work require this elementary gesture. They ask themselves, what is it made of? And then they understand, through the physical gesture, as it were. Most of the time I think viewers understand without being aware that they do, and this is what interests me.
At the outset of the process, I think of the work on the basic level. Then comes the stage of insights and definitions of what I created. These are slow processes of attentiveness, as in the work with the coffee cups: it happened when I left the cups instead of throwing them away, and then I noticed the mold that gradually accumulated inside the cups, and all of a sudden I could see before me the Hula Valley, the Jezreel Valley. The work took its direction when I was surrounded. That's why I need routine; to teach or work in the studio."
